EPISODE 31 – DON’T LIE ABOUT TIME
INSPIRING LIFE SCHOOL PODCAST
EPISODE 31 TRANSCRIPT:
DON’T LIE ABOUT TIME
Now as I mentioned in the last episode – in the lead up to Christmas and the New Year I will be recording shorter pep talk episodes as I know this time of the year is busy and that way it will be easier for you to consume a quick episode or two on the run.
But I promise they will still be jam-packed with so much value so they are definitely worth listening to.
Now I am really excited about today’s episode because it is a topic I sort of love to rant about.
So time…I’m calling this episode DON’T LIE ABOUT TIME because I have noticed people love to say oh I don’t have time to do this or that or they love to use time as an excuse for not getting things done.
This is where I have to share with you something important, without resorting to yelling it because I want this notion to really sink into your head and it’s this:
ALL YOU HAVE IS TIME MY FRIEND
We all get the same 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 12 months a year and so on to live our life.
Of course that time is not guaranteed to us indefinitely, it is a limited resource but you are listening to this podcast today, yesterday you did have 1440 minutes at your disposal to use in whatever manner you wished yesterday and you got to choose how to spend that time.
I think a good place to start with this topic is for you to ask yourself WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU DON’T HAVE TIME FOR? Is it to exercise?
To go out on date with your partner?
To chase your dreams?
To spend one on one time with your children?
Now the next shift is to understand that it isn’t that you don’t have time for these things but just that YOU HAVEN’T MADE TIME FOR THESE THINGS.
I know that it is a very subtle distinction but it’s also the truth.
If you aren’t doing something you want to do – or something you just SAY you want to do – it’s because you haven’t made time for it.
And I think this is something important for us to OWN.
We all act as if we are at the mercy of our diaries but we need to remember we get to decide what goes into those diaries.
Your kids don’t need to have a million extracurricular activities, you choose those activities because you thought that it would be best for your kids.
Same goes for your job if your work hours aren’t particularly appealing.
Remember you can always change your job, you really can, you don’t have to do anything that makes you feel miserable for the rest of your life, but until then own the fact that you have chosen to add this to your schedule.
The most important thing I want you to take away from this episode is that you are in charge of your diary.
You get to decide how you spend your time.
You don’t have to say yes to any commitments you don’t want to do so don’t act as if you do.
You are allowed to say the words NO, you can say no to anything you want because you are a grown adult.
And if you choose to say yes, then just own it.
Admit that you are doing it because a part of you wants to rather than whinging and complaining about it being a time suck.
As adults we have the ability to make the time for the things that are important to us and there’s nothing wrong with admitting that some things just aren’t important to us.
Like today maybe I don’t feel like exercising and that’s okay.
You won’t hear me saying I don’t have time for exercise because if I wanted to do it I WOULD FIND THE TIME.
I would wake up early before the kids get up to go for a walk or I would dance around the kitchen while making dinner and run up those stairs of mine if I felt like getting my heart racing and burning some energy.
I would do it if I wanted to do it but I wouldn’t lie and say that I don’t have the time.
All I have is time remember? I have achieved many big goals over life and the only way that they got done is by me MAKING THE TIME to do it.
Clearing out some space in the diary and kicking out the things that were wasting my precious minutes and hours like mindless social media scrolling and TV time.
I know I talked about this on the HOW TO BE PRODUCTIVE episode but I just want to remind you that wasting just 15 minutes a day adds up to 3.8 full days over the course of the year and wasting just 1 hours equals close to 15 days a year.
THAT’S TWO WEEKS OF WASTED TIME if you are prone to spending too long on Facebook or Instagram.
If you want to waste time that’s okay too but just own the fact that you do it.
Once you own the fact that you are steering this ship you are sailing, that you are the director of this film you are filming that’s called your life and the pilot flying this plane, once you accept that you are the one in charge then EVERYTHING will change for you because once you know you are in charge you will also discover that you can make changes in your life if you want to.
This is so different from when people approach life from the place that other people are at fault, other people are to blame, other people are causing you to feel and think and act in a particular way when I am sorry but that’s not true.
You are in charge of your thoughts and your actions.
You’re going to die one day and you are an adult now and you can hopefully comprehend what I am sharing with you today so please stop wasting your time and use it wisely to achieve the things you want to achieve, whether it is a happy family, happy marriage or simply to chase those beautiful dreams you are holding in your heart.
It honestly is too late once you are gone to go back and change the way you spent your time.
So I want to end this mini pep talk with a few of my favorite quotes about time. So here they are:
A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life. Charles Darwin
You will never “find” time for anything. If you want time, you must make it. Charles Buxton
Time is a created thing. To say ‘I don’t have time,’ is like saying, ‘I don’t want to.” Lao Tzu
Realize that now, in this moment of time, you are creating. You are creating your next moment. Sara Paddison
Time is more valuable than money. You can get more money but you cannot get more time. Jim Rohn
If you don’t make the time to work on creating the life you want, you’re eventually going to be forced to spend a lot of time dealing with a life you don’t want. Kevin Ngo
You don’t need more time in your day. You need to decide. Seth Godin
While people brood, time skips ahead without looking back. Alan Lightman
Either you run the day or the day runs you. Jim Rohn
Enjoy life. There’s plenty of time to be dead. Hans Christian Andersen
So my final message to you is this – It’s not about having time. It’s about making time.
Stop waiting for time because time isn’t waiting for you. I am sure you have already noticed that time flies whether you are having fun or not, whether you are chasing your dreams or not so just make sure to use it wisely.
So I hope this has been helpful to you.
As always thanks so much for being here for you. I love and appreciate you all and can’t wait to catch you in the next episode.
